Having been approved by the SCA Board of Directors in 2013 and awarded for the first time in 2014, the SCA Swedish Language Scholarship is a relatively new member of the circle of scholarships offered by Swedish Council of America. This scholarship is intended to encourage undergraduate students to enhance their knowledge of and fluency in the Swedish language by furthering their studies in Sweden and by interacting with native speakers.

To qualify, nominees must be intending to participate in an accredited, college-sponsored, study-abroad program where the participants get to interact with native Swedes and spend academic time studying Swedish language for college or university credit. The proposed studies in Sweden must be completed within 12 months of receiving the scholarship. The amount awarded is up to $4,000 and up to three scholarships will be granted annually, depending upon community support.

Recipients will selected from the candidates nominated by the Presidents of the six Swedish Heritage Colleges that are Institutional Members of SCA.

Nominees must be outstanding, full-time undergraduate students intending to participate in an accredited, college-sponsored, study-abroad program in Sweden where the participants get to interact with native Swedes and spend academic time studying Swedish language for college or university credit. Nominees are assessed on academic achievement, demonstrated interest in Sweden, creative potential, and ability to represent effectively and positively the Swedish Council of America and their home college while in Sweden.

Unlike the SCA Glenn T. Seaborg Science Scholarship and the SCA Curtis L. Carlson Swedish American Scholarship that have been offered for decades, this scholarship is without a named patron. The long-term goal is to be able to provide four full-year scholarships for Swedish language studies in Sweden and to expand eligibility beyond the six Swedish Heritage Colleges. SCA is actively seeking generous permanent underwriting of this scholarship. Interested donors should contact the SCA office.

If you are interested in being nominated for consideration for the SCA Swedish Language Scholarship, contact your college president or head of your department. Nominations for the next award are due in the beginning of February.
