2013 Grant Recipients

For the 2013 Grant Cycle, SCA was pleased to award 25 grants totaling $34,803 in support of the following organizations and projects.

Akvavit Theatre, Chicago, IL     $750

US premiere of the Swedish play They Died with Their Boots On by Sofia Fredén, in a new English translation.

American Swedish Historical Museum, Philadelphia, PA     $2,250

Playing with Pippi exhibition that ties together a Swedish Institute exhibition and ASHM-produced interactive stations.

American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis, MN     $2,000

Pull, Twist, Blow–Transforming Swedish Glass exhibition done in cooperation with The Glass Factory (Sweden).

Amery Swedish Club, Amery,  WI     $500

Swedish folk dance workshop led by Dr. Carolyn Wedin for members of the club and for the general community in Polk County, Wisconsin.

Bishop Hill Heritage Association, Bishop Hill, IL     $1,003

Rarely Seen Treasures from the Attic, a summer exhibit of rarely or never seen materials from the BHHA’s collections.

Cedar Cultural Center, Minneapolis, MN     $500

Performances by Swedish artist, Junip, as part of the center’s Scandinavian Music Series in their 25th season celebration.

Concordia Language Villages, Moorhead, MN     $1,200

New curricular framework for the 4-week high school credit program focused on Swedish language, history and lifestyle at Sjölunden, the Swedish language village.

Gothenburg Committee – Chicago Sister City Int’l, Chicago, IL     $1,200

The Dream of a Better Life, a musical about Swedish emigration to America first created by the Emigrants’ House and the group Wavemakers in Gothenburg, and the Charles Unger Experience in Chicago.

Historic and Cultural Society of Clay County, Moorhead, MN     $1,500

Creating and installing two permanent outdoor interpretive signs at the Bergquist Cabin, telling about John Bergquist’s life as a Swedish immigrant.

Jenny Lind Chapel, Andover, IL     $750

Day camp for children and/or adults centered on the life of Swedish immigrants who came to Andover, Illinois  in the mid 1880s.

Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, Wilmington, DE     $2,500

New educational booklet about the original Kalmar Nyckel and its first transatlantic voyage to the Delaware Valley in 1638.

McPherson County Old Mill Museum, Lindsborg, KS     $1,000

Two-day genealogy workshop in cooperation with three Swedish-based genealogists and as a means of participating in the biennial Svensk Hyllningsfest.

Musiker utan Gränser, Hägersten, SE     $1,000

Presentations of the Swedish folk musical Värmlänningarna in Southern California and Illinois, in partnership with Glenn T. Seaborg Lodge #719 – VOA.

New Sweden Centre, Wilmington, DE     $2,000

A Walk Through Swedish-American Globalization, an exhibit that highlights the contributions of the early Swedes and their descendants.

Nordic Heritage Museum, Seattle, WA     $2,000

Dressing Swedish: From Hazelius to Salander, an exhibition that explores the changing definitions of Swedishness as expressed through clothing and textiles in Sweden and the Swedish-American community.

Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN     $1,500

Critical Mass, an installation featuring the work of contemporary Swedish ceramics artist Henny Linn Kjellberg.

Scandinavian Charitable Society of Greater Boston, Boston, MA     $1,500

New Wave Swedish Poetry, a performance by four Swedish contemporary poets who blur the boundaries between spoken word, slam poetry and performance art.

Seattle Lilla Spelmanslag, Seattle, WA     $1,500

Tour of Sweden in June – July 2013 by a youth folk music group.

Strindberg Lodge #259 – VOA, Winnipeg, MB     $1,000

A weekend of activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the lodge.

Swedish American Museum, Chicago, IL     $1,500

An exhibition of paintings by Swedish artist Michael Söderlundh and musical performance by Michael’s father, Lille Bror Söderlundh, performed by North Park University Orchestra.

Swedish Cultural Heritage Foundation of Northern California, Turlock, CA     $1,500

Digitization of the entire microfilm collection of the San Francisco Swedish-language newspaper Vestkusten from 1887-2007, and hosting with the California Digital Newspaper Collection.

Swedish Historical Society of Rockford, Rockford, IL     $800

Summer camp, teaching Swedish language, culture and history to the children of Rockford, Illinois,  regardless of their heritage.

Swenson Swedish Immigration Center, Rock Island, IL     $2,000

Indians and Immigrants: Entangled Histories, a conference of Swedish and American scholars exploring the relationships between Scandinavian immigrants and Indians in the Midwest during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

University of Delaware – Department of Anthropology, Newark, DE     $2,000

Encountering the ‘Others’ in the Atlantic World: Perspectives from the Materials World, an international conference held jointly by the University of Delaware and Lund University.

Vasa National Archives, Bishop Hill, IL     $1,350

Eight Seasons in Sapmi, a photography exhibit that explores the history, culture and landscape of the Sami people.
