The awards were presented in Philadelphia in September, at which time the Swedish Council honored two outstanding persons who have devoted much of their time and efforts to promote knowledge and understanding of the Swedish heritage in the American life—as well as promote Swedish culture and traditions of today.
His Excellency Jan Eliasson, the former Ambassador of Sweden to the United States (2000–2005) received the America’s Swede of the Year Award for his deep understanding of the mission carried out by the Swedish Council’s affiliate member organizations. His support by visiting these organizations has been greatly appreciated and encouraging for them in their work to strengthen the cultural ties between America
Agneta Nilsson received the Great Swedish Heritage Award for being the founder of the Swedish Women’s Educational Association, SWEA, which from its inception in 1979 now encompasses over 8,000 members in 77 chapters in 33 countries. The mission of SWEA is to cultivate and nurture the Swedish language, to support and spread Swedish culture and traditions, and to provide personal and professional contacts.
